Last night I was standing outside when I looked down the driveway and saw the outline of an animal. It was slowly approaching. I figured it was the stray cat from my prior post, who roams freely in the neighborhood. As I continued to stare at it, it disappeared.

So then I was questioning my eyesight and wondering if I was getting floaters in my eyes or something, because I could no longer see the animal. Since it was dark, I thought I’d take a step closer, when the animal’s form re-appeared.

Still unsure of what kind of animal I was staring at, I stood still and saw a little white on its body. “Oh boy,” I thought, “What if it is a skunk?” It could have been a raccoon or perhaps a small porcupine. So I decided not to walk towards it.

Then the animal turned and I saw small pointy ears. A rabbit!

Since it was a large rabbit, I was wondering if it was someones pet. Most wild rabbits that I’ve seen here have been on the smaller side.

I began talking to it, which I know is weird, but that’s just who I am. I made sounds like “chk, chk, chk,” and said “Come on, bunny, you can hop by me. I won’t hurt you.”

The rabbit must have surely understood the tone in my voice and realized that I was not a threat, because it did indeed hop right by me! I quickly reached for my cell phone to take a picture, but the rabbit hopped too fast as it passed me and I couldn’t capture it with the camera.

Thinking how proud I was that I had communicated with a rabbit so well and had not scared it away, I realized where the animal was going. I had been blocking its path, and so it hopped by me and headed right for Nonna’s garden!

Although at this time of the year there is only broccoli left (which alone is a feat to note) I realized that I should have discouraged the rabbit from entering. But, then again, it’s Thanksgiving time and I figured the bunny could have its own little feast for a day.

Today I am wondering what other creatures I will encounter!
