I’ve been doing some yoga exercises on a semi-regular basis for the last nine months or so. I’ve blogged about the subject in several prior posts. Today I was thinking about the benefits of those exercises and realized that the yoga has been effecting my digestive system in a positive way. I’ve heard the instructors on the dvd’s as they’ve mentioned this, but never really paid much attention to it. After all of these months I have to admit that I haven’t had any problems with my “constitution” let’s just say. Yeah, the yoga has been keeping me “regular.”

A few years ago if anyone would have told me I’d be blogging about such a subject I would have laughed them out of the room. But there it is. As I get older I do indeed find myself talking about such subject matter and I’ve gotten quite comfortable with that realization. I still remain in total denial, however, to the fact that I am getting older. Perhaps the yoga has helped me in that way also, as its calming effects have worked a little to keep my stress level down.

I try to do a morning yoga routine (thanks to my cousin who shared her dvd with me). I’m not a type A personality by any means, so my goal is set at four to five times a week for the routines. On the video the instructor states “In the beginning these exercises may not seem beneficial. But I believe over time you will see a great difference.” I realized today that I have finally seen that “great difference.”

No, I still cannot bend over with straight legs and touch the flat of my hands on the ground like I used to be able to do when I was in my 20’s and 30’s. But I do notice more flexibility, tighter abdominal muscles and a general over all feeling of well being. And that’s enough for me.

So I will persist with the yoga until the weather gets better and I can get outside for the walks that I do enjoy. In the meantime I’ll continue to tell myself that these little yoga routines are fine. And I’ll keep trying for that “touch the ground” flexibility!

Anyone out there who has just started yoga, I encourage you to continue. It’s true that, with time, the exercises do work!
